The 50th anniversary of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial was commemorated on three coins. Surcharges from the sale of these pieces were divided between the the Treasury and the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Society of Black Hills, South Dakota, with money going to finance restoration work on the national landmark.

This Proof Silver Dollar was produced by the San Francisco Mint. It depicts the Mount Rushmore heads on the obverse with a depiction of the Presidential Seal on the reverse. The Obverse was designed by Marika Somogyi. The reverse was designed by former chief sculptor-engraver of the Mint Frank Gasparro.
